When Hal the Halloween Cat, beloved mascot of Davis Graveyard, passed after 15 years of faithfully greeting guests and “helping” with props, we knew he needed more than just a memory — he needed a monument. So we did what we do best: monster mudded a toy store cat, added a base, a hand-carved plaque, a little paint, some glow-in-the-dark eyes… and just like that, Hal still watches over the yard in spirit.

️ In this two-part class, you’ll create your own creepy, cute, or commemorative pet statue using monster mud and a stuffed animal of your choice.

Because our furry family members deserve to be remembered.

Every great story has a beginning, and this one starts with Hal, the official Halloween Cat of Davis Graveyard.

For nearly 15 years, Hal greeted guests, supervised every build (whether we asked him to or not), and somehow managed to find the warmest spot in the workshop while the rest of us worked. When Hal passed away, we knew a simple photograph wasn’t enough. He had earned a permanent place in the graveyard he helped build.

So we did what we do best.

We transformed a toy store cat into a lasting memorial using Monster Mud, a handcrafted base, a custom-carved plaque, careful paintwork, and a pair of glowing eyes that still watch over the cemetery each October.

Later came a regal tribute to Queen Elizabeth II in the form of a corgi statue, and before long people began asking if they could learn to create memorials for their own beloved companions.

Now we’re opening the workshop so you can.

Whether you want to create a heartfelt tribute to a cherished pet, a whimsical Halloween companion, or a spooky guardian for your own cemetery display, this class will guide you through the entire process.

What to Bring

  • A stuffed animal approximately 16″ x 16″
    (Larger plush animals can be accommodated for an additional materials fee.)
  • The wording you’d like on your memorial plaque—you’ll carve it yourself!

    Classic Bust Workshop

    Create your own timeless stone-style bust—without the marble, chisels, or several years apprenticing under a Renaissance sculptor.

    In this hands-on workshop, you’ll transform a simple male wig head into a classic library-worthy bust using EVA foam to build the shoulders, clothing, and lapels. You’ll learn how to use Loctite spray foam to sculpt and shape the hair, then texture, finish, and paint your creation to give it the aged appearance of carved stone.

    We’ll walk you through the process step-by-step, from constructing the bust form to adding the final layers of creepy old-world character.

    Styrofoam Tombstone Workshop

    Learn the techniques that made Davis Graveyard’s tombstones a Halloween tradition! In this hands-on workshop, you’ll transform a simple sheet of foam into a realistic, weathered cemetery marker using the same carving, texturing, painting, and aging methods we use in the yard each year.

    This introductory class is perfect for beginners and includes a basic tombstone design featuring a 5-word (or fewer) epitaph and one carved accent. You’ll leave with a finished tombstone ready to haunt your own yard—and the skills to create many more.
